The missing layer - Virtualizing smart spaces
نویسندگان
چکیده
With the Virtual State Layer (VSL), an abstraction for software-based orchestration of smart spaces is presented. The aim of the VSL is to ease the programming of orchestration software while not limiting its functionality. The VSL primarily provides: the virtualization of that part of the real world that can be orchestrated via sensors and actuators, a base for the creation of portable orchestration services, mechanisms to easily couple services, and the availability of state over time. The VSL approach is conceptually situated between ontology-based systems and protocol-translating systems for orchestrating smart spaces. The concept and its implementation — a Java-based distributed P2P publish-subscribe system — are presented. Keywords-autonomous computing; distributed computing; smart space; app store

Scalable I/O Virtualization via Self-Virtualizing Devices
The virtualization of I/O devices is an integral part of system virtualization. This includes both virtualizing the physical devices and managing them across multiple guest virtual machines (VMs) or domains running on top of a virtual machine monitor (VMM) or hypervisor (HV). This paper presents the notion of self-virtualizing devices, where for higher end, ‘smart’ I/O devices, selected virtual...
متن کاملVirtualizing Operating Systems for Seamless Distributed Environments
Applications and operating systems can be augmented with extra functionality by injecting additional middleware into the boundary layer between them, without tampering with their binaries. Using this scheme, we separate the physical resource bindings of the application and replace it with virtual bindings. This is called virtualization. We are developing a virtualizing Operating System (vOS) re...
متن کاملPreemptive Module Replacement Using the virtualizing Operating System
Software aging causes software programs to fail over time. Rejuvenation of the software is a preemptive methodology developed to reduce failure, which reduces the need for complex methods to identify and fix problems after a failure has occurred. It does not eliminate the need for managing failure, it simply moves the bulk of the processing to a more controllable and simpler pre-failure state. ...
متن کاملIntelligent Fusion of Visual, Radio and Heterogeneous Embedded Sensors’ Information within Cooperative and Distributed Smart Spaces
In this paper the main issues of a Smart Space design are discussed with particular attention to different hierarchical abstraction level fusion tasks and to context information representation. General definitions are given to identify a common framework to explore Smart Space problems. On these bases a general architecture is defined along with its functionalities and a practical example is ou...
متن کاملArchitecture and Knowledge-Driven Self-Adaptive Security in Smart Space
Dynamic and heterogeneous smart spaces cause challenges for security because it is impossible to anticipate all the possible changes at design-time. Self-adaptive security is an applicable solution for this challenge. This paper presents an architectural approach for security adaptation in smart spaces. The approach combines an adaptation loop, Information Security Measuring Ontology (ISMO) and...
